Spirit Green

I've been in Johannesburg for about two months now. The time has passed quickly; whirlwind speed it's safe to say, and adjusting hasn't been easy. When you make a home somewhere new, going back to your old life, even if only briefly, is a shock to the system. I've struggled to get into a healthy routine of exercise and proper eating, to balance the work and stress and partying and and and. I went back to the gym yesterday, and my head finally feels clearer than it has in weeks. The haze is lifting, and I feel myself slowly gaining control of what felt like a downward spiral.

Though we dragged him for filth, and revelled in our unkindness on the internet, Kanye West's latest implosion has been really important for black society and it's treatment of mental health. Illness of the mind and in turn health of the mind should be more widely recognised as a legitimate concern, in particular amongst the black community, who are society's most burdened group of people. Personally, I'm very aware of my mental health. I recognise my triggers, but committing to to the solutions is always the hardest part. It's in the little things; the 'one foot in front of the other' solutions, that aggregate towards a long term remedy.

Step one was going back to the gym, taking back control of my body instead of dwelling on the discomfort of insecurity. Step two, is getting my eating patterns back on track. Waking up early, paying attention to my nutrient intake, my sleeping patterns; and actively trying to rectify them. It doesn't sound like much, but I can already feel myself coming back to myself, and that sense of safety is priceless. I'm better equipped to take on the day, and then the week, and then the month, and sooner or later, the entire year. Control is my drug of choice, and I'm back on the drip.
