Ladies and gentlemen, today marks the official start of Summer here in New York. If you ask me, it's been Summer for a good few weeks already with highs of 35C, but I won't fight the weatherman, that would burn too much energy and I'm already sweating buckets.
Fun weekend just passed, the South African community here in Manhattan threw a Youth Day braai out at the Hudson River Park in Harlem, a grand total of 150 blocks from my apartment, which, you'll be pleased to know, I cycled both ways. Needless to say, I'm stiff this Monday. Summer body goals? I guess I'm too late.
A couple of my girlfriends in partnership with Brand SA put the whole thing together, and we spent the afternoon braaing, dancing and doing too much in memory of those who fought that fateful day in 1976. I was the face-painter, a disastrous assignment after a couple Whiskey and Carrot juices (I know that sounds weird but it's a thing). I found myself Googling 'easy Tiger face paint' and 'Butterfly face paint for kids'...Take my word for it, face painting is not my calling, but I had fun and kids are forgiving when there are balloons involved. I got off lightly.
Now that Summer is actually a real thing, cocktails have become of the utmost importance in my life, naturally, since Rosé is basic and beer isn't my thing, it gives me great pleasure to indulge in the odd fresh cocktail. No sugar, no syrup, no fake flavour or concentrate, just real fruit goodness. Pick your poison and get to blending, the heat is only going to get worse friends.
For the first edition of this summer's Cocktails with Kenny, I literally used whatever liquor I had left over in my fridge from my rooftop party last weekend (just so happened to be vodka which isn't really my favourite), and whatever fruit seemed fun at the time. This is literally a 4 ingredient cocktail, if you count the ice. It's really fresh tasting and the Parsley gives it a very clean refreshing aroma and flavour. Perfect for a boiling hot Summer afternoon. So, super easy peasy, I hope you enjoy! Stay tuned for more delicious cocktail recipes, my next mission is boozy popsicles...I'm into it.
You will need:
- 2 peeled Kiwis cut into rough chunks
- 2 shot Vodka, Gin or White Rum would have worked too, and quantity is up to you
- 1/2 cup Water
- 1 cup Ice
- A couple sprigs of Parsley, just the leaves, no stems (adds freshness to the flavour)
Literally, blend and be great!
